Lieutenant Gemmer
Myrddin Gemmer nervously fidgeted with the still new rank insignia that adorned his dress uniform as he stood in Admiral Ackbar's office. The Rebel Alliance's victory above Endor was still fresh, and promotion or not, Gemmer had decided it was time to make good on his plans.
The admiral studied the resignation letter Gemmer had composed and gravely put the datapad down.
"I see that Commanders Skywalker and Antilles have signed off on your request. But are you sure about this, Commander Gemmer?" Ackbar asked.
Gemmer swallowed and stuck to his guns. "Yes, sir. Palpatine and Vader are dead. We've destroyed another Death Star. I don't doubt that the Empire has some fight left in it, but I figure it's all over but the shouting. It seems like as good as a time as any to muster out."
"You're an excellent pilot and a steady hand, Gemmer. You earned your first Corellian Cross flying lead escort during the evacuation of Hoth and another during the assault on Spindrift. Your boots were some of the first and last on Golrath and Arbra. And now you've just been awarded your first command. You're telling me you don't want it?"
"No, sir, I mean, yes, sir, that is..."
Ackbar laughed. "At ease, commander. Feel free to speak freely. I hope I can convince you to stay, but you've served more than your share."
Gemmer tried to relax, "Thank you, sir. As much as I appreciate the promotion, I just don't think I'm cut out for command. I'm no hero."
"I don't know about that, young man. According to Princess Leia heroes are simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. You don't need a lightsaber or a Wookiee co-pilot to be a hero. You didn't stand by idly in the face of the Empire. You've seen the Rebellion through its darkest days and into the light. You should be proud."
"I am, sir, but I think I'm ready to move on. Captain Thorben and I found this cantina on Zeltros that's for sale. And I gotta say, tending bar on the shore of Lake Zeltara doesn't sound all bad."
Ackbar nodded. "Indeed it doesn't, Commander. I won't stand in your way. I'll process your separation orders today."
Ackbar stood up and saluted Gemmer. Before Gemmer could return the salute, Luke Skywalker entered the admirals' office. "Admiral, Commander, sorry to interrupt. We've been getting some strange reports from the frontier. Han and Chewie are going to check out Kashyyyk, but I think we need to send a scouting team to Trenwyth. You up for one last run, Gemmer?"
Gemmer thought it over. "One more mission? Yes, sir!"
